Itching for More: The Importance of Scratching That Entrepreneurial Itch (and How Your Dog Can Help!)

Today is the 4th of July.

The date in 2016 we decided to go ahead and build on our instincts. We felt we were free, independent and could start a revolution against the old ways. The “buy cheap, throw and replace” model that is costing so much and meaning so little. We've all been there. That nagging feeling, that persistent itch – the one that whispers (or screams) "you’ve got to do something about this". It's not just an entrepreneurial itch, it’s more about “putting something right because what you are currently looking at is so wrong”.

That was the push for Hixx. We started out with a simple belief; dogs deserved better. Better comfort, better support, all wrapped around a return to the natural world they were born of.  

Our dogs had health challenges and there’s nothing like watching your own dogs struggle to motivate you to make changes.

That determination to make a difference gets you through lots of challenges. Nothing crazy, just the normal stuff that happens when you are starting something new. Ups, downs, learnings, it is all there on the path. When you finally align the holy trinity of product, ethos and happy customers, the feeling of accomplishment is unparalleled.

But here's the thing, you don't have to go it alone. No entrepreneur does. Just like in our email to our amazing customers (thanks again, everyone), your support system is crucial.

Think of it as your very own orthopaedic dog bed. Naturally supportive and good for your inner and outer being.

We found these essential to our support:

• Friends and Family: Sharing dreams with people that will believe in you is key. A carefully selected pack who are going to add rather than subtract to your ideas.  Their belief in you can be a powerful motivator and provide a valuable sounding board. 
• Mentors: Find someone who's walked the path before you. Their experience can be invaluable and introduces an element of accountability. 
• Community: Surround yourself with other entrepreneurs, suppliers, customers (potential or actual) or people facing the same challenges. Sharing the journey makes it easier.

Don't forget your dog as well.  Just like our orthopaedic dog beds that naturally  support your dog, your dog can support you. Studies have shown that owning a dog can reduce stress and improve overall well-being. A happy, healthy dog by your side is a great way of not feeling alone on the journey.

We know we would have missed out on so much if we hadn’t taken a leap of faith and followed our natural instincts. It felt worse to ignore it. It’s worth making that commitment to yourself to chase that dream otherwise you will forever be left wondering what would have happened.
